*COMMENTARY*
The word "conscience" did not appear in the KJV, Old Testament, as can be observed in verse 5 of our text. However, the Hebrew word usually translated as "heart", does refer to conscience in several passages. The English Dictionary defines conscience as Internal awareness of a moral standard in the mind concerning the quality of one's motives and the consciousness of one's actions. Therefore, human conscience is a personal awareness of right and wrong that guides his actions.
Our text paints a very beautiful picture of the human conscience. King Saul was chasing David about to kill him. For once, his conscience did not smite him. But see David who cut off, just a part of King Saul's royal robe, (not his toe or finger), confessing and crying for mercy. Some people would justify David's action even if he had killed king Saul. David's conscience smote him for cutting Saul's skirt. That shows the type of conscience that he had. We often find ourselves doing worse things to our leaders, pastors, parents, children, etc. than David, cutting off Saul's skirts, yet without any remorse. This goes to show the type of conscience some of us have.
Many people justify their actions because they claim that their consciences did not prick them. That raises a million-dollar question about the type of conscience some people have. May the Lord help us to heed the wise man's counsel in, Prov. 4:23, Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life"
