THE PRINCIPLES OF FOLLOWERSHIP BY Dr Bright Otso

Followership refers to the behaviors, attitudes, and actions of individuals who follow a leader. It emphasizes the role of followers in the leader-follower dynamic and how they contribute to achieving organizational goals. Unlike traditional leadership models that focus primarily on the leader, followership highlights the influence, responsibility, and active engagement of followers in the success of leadership efforts.

While the principles of followership emphasize the qualities and behaviors of individuals who are effective in supporting and complementing leaders. Effective followership is critical in any organization, as followers play a key role in achieving collective goals. Here are several core principles of followership:

1, Commitment to the Mission: Effective followers are dedicated to the organization’s mission and vision. They understand the larger purpose of their role and work to fulfill it alongside leaders.

2, Support and Challenge the Leader: Good followers support their leaders by offering assistance, insight, and encouragement, but they also provide constructive feedback or challenge ideas when necessary for the greater good.

3, Responsibility and Initiative: Effective followers are proactive. They take responsibility for their actions and contribute ideas and solutions rather than passively waiting for instructions.

4,Self-Management: Followers should be capable of managing their own tasks and responsibilities efficiently. They should not require constant supervision but should stay focused on objectives.

5, Critical Thinking: Being able to think independently and critically is crucial for followers. This involves analyzing situations, making sound judgments, and offering reasoned input to the leader.

6, Adaptability and Flexibility: Situations change, and good followers can adapt to these changes. They can pivot their efforts as needed to meet new challenges or objectives.

7, Effective Communication: Followers should maintain clear and open lines of communication with leaders and team members. This ensures alignment on goals, priorities, and expectations.

8, Team Player: Collaborative and supportive of other team members, good followers understand that the success of the organization depends on collective effort, not just individual performance.

9, Accountability: Followers should hold themselves accountable for their actions, taking ownership of both successes and failures.

10, Emotional Intelligence: This involves understanding and managing one’s emotions and those of others, enabling followers to maintain productive relationships and navigate group dynamics effectively.

Effective followership doesn’t mean passive compliance; it is an active, engaged role that complements leadership and enhances overall organizational performance.
