Dealing with FALSE FACTS AND FAKE EVIDENCE

Introduction: I don’t know how many of you have felt like the king of the world one minute and then as far down in the dumps as you could be the next, but it's not an uncommon theme, both in the Bible and in real life. Joseph was the favoured son of his father but then was thrown into a pit by his brothers.

Then he was taken out of the pit and sold to Arabs who took him to another country where he was sold again. No sooner is he sold in Egypt, than he was exalted to the chief position in his house. But once again, that will come to a screeching halt.

While we look at the details of these stories, do not hesitate to relate them to your own life. It's a truth that we can’t know what’s good without what’s bad, we can’t truly know what’s sweet without comparing it to what’s bitter. Unless we get sick, we can’t appreciate what it means to be healthy

Oh God, contrast is what makes the sweet even sweeter
Contrast helps me to know how good feeling good really can be
And knowing the brightness is one hundred per cent neater
Having walked before in darkness; now in your light eternally

We can have general ideas about things, but contrast is what helps us to understand things more completely. Joseph’s life is one of peaks and valleys, but so are ours. Through the good and the bad, the Lord was with Joseph. He was a son of the line of promise and God was faithful to be with him in every situation.

If He was with Joseph, who lived before Jesus, how much more sure can we be that He is with us now that we have the full measure of God’s love poured out in us through His Son? This is why Paul confidently tells us again and again about the sure hope and promises that we have in Christ.

Don’t lose sight of this. Joseph was never abandoned, and the Lord will never leave you nor forsake you either.

Text Verse: “For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord.
9 “For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are My ways higher than your ways,
And My thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:8, 9

When Joseph was rejected by his family, sold into bondage, or thrown into prison, he must have wondered about the love of God and the promises passed on to him by his father about the God of Abraham. And yet, he is a model example of one who continues to act with integrity in every situation he faces.

Paul was the same way. He trusted Jesus with every fibre of his being and even in the most difficult of circumstances. He understood that the Lord’s ways are higher than our ways and His thoughts are infinitely above ours.

If you understand this, then no matter how bad things get, you can know that God is right there with you, and direct you through those things to a great finish line. It is His word that allows us to have this confidence. Therefore, let’s open it again today and see a wonderful example of it in Joseph’s trials. And so… May God speak to us through His word today and may His glorious name ever be praised.

I. Accusing the Overseer

Let me give a quick review of what happened in the previous verses. Joseph was sold by his brothers and taken down to Egypt where he was bought by Potiphar, the chief of the executioners. Because of his faithful service, he was eventually elevated to the overseer of Potiphar’s entire house.

In turn, Potiphar’s house was more than abundantly blessed. Everything from the house to the field prospered. Eventually though, because of his ravishingly good looks, Potiphar’s wife cast longing eyes on him. She continuously nagged him to lie with her, but he resisted. Now we start up with verse 11…

11 But it happened about this time when Joseph went into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the house was inside,

“About this time” takes us right back to verse 8 of the chapter which said, “And it came to pass after these things that his master’s wife cast longing eyes on Joseph, and she said, ‘Lie with me.'”

Potiphar’s wife had longing eyes for Joseph and the burning didn’t end when he shunned her the first time. Instead, her passions went right on. She had been rejected by a handsome slave and this probably only made her want him more. In his usual order of duty, we’re told that Joseph went into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the house was inside.

According to the Jewish historian Flavius Josephus, this was because it was a time of a festival. He tells us that it would be usual for the women to attend these things, but instead, she told her husband that she was sick and would stay home.

That would explain why there was no one else around and even Joseph probably didn’t know she was home. In verse ten, it implied that he tried to avoid such entanglements. There it said, “day by day, that he did not heed her, to lie with her or to be with her.”

12 that she caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me.”

In verse eight, she said these same words, shibah time. Since verse eight, no other words from her are recorded. And so here we see the Bible do what it does quite a few other times. It is showing the depth of the intent of a statement by a person by exactly repeating it without any intermediary words from them.

This repetition by Potiphar’s wife is intended to show us the perverse nature of the woman and her determined purpose of pursuing this course until she wears Joseph out. Such repetitions are used in films and TV shows nowadays.

One person will be introduced from time to time and they say the same thing every time they’re seen. If you wondered where the idea came from, the Bible is a top candidate as a guess. Even if that’s not where Hollywood got the idea, it shows the Bible’s depth of the understanding of humanity by recording things like this.

If God is the Creator, and He is, and this is His word, and it is, then it will give us insights into the nature of man in a timeless way. Little insights like these are amazing in their literary and anthropological value.

After having read the Bible through for the 20th time or so, I started making each new time interesting by looking for something different. On one of those times, I searched for every such repetition in the Bible. I found about a hundred or so of them and then catalogued them in order and then in a few different ways.

If you take time to do things like this, you’ll find it simply wonderful tucked away. These are fantastic little treasures that may have never been seen or thought about before. So use your imagination when you study the Bible. It’s an infinite resource of wisdom and beauty for us to peruse.

Yes, Lord, Charlie is right about this one, for sure
Searching Your word will only help as I grow day by day
So give me a hunger to pursue You more and more
And in the study of Your word, my hunger I will allay

12 (can't) But he left his garment in her hand, and fled and ran outside.

In the Middle East, even today in some cultures, but throughout the whole area at this time, the people wore garments that were loose around the body. It is hot and having something like this would have been cool and yet fashionable. Slave garments would probably have been of different material, style, and/or colour to identify them, but they would follow the general motif of the day.

In Joseph’s case, she got hold of it, probably hoping to pull him closer. A touch will excite more than just words and maybe she was hoping this would do the trick. Instead, away he runs with either very little or nothing at all, to cover him.

The same thing happened at the Garden of Gethsemane as one of Jesus’ disciples fled from the guards who arrested Him –

“Now a certain young man followed Him, having a linen cloth thrown around his naked body. And the young men laid hold of him, 52 and he left the linen cloth and fled from them naked.” Mark 14:51, 52

Because Mark is the only one who recorded this in the gospels, it’s believed that he was writing about himself. Both Matthew and John do the same thing as they speak about themselves in the third person in their gospels.

The contrast is notable though. Joseph fled for the honour of what is right; Mark fled in the disgrace of doing what was wrong. One fled to God in righteousness; the other fled from God in cowardice. One will be punished for doing the right thing; the other will be forgiven for doing the wrong thing.

Such is the marvellous tapestry of God’s word as it unfolds before us. And such are the lessons we can learn for ourselves. We very well may be punished or harmed for pursuing righteousness, but God is watching and recording our actions for future rewards.

Likewise, we may take the wrong course and run from what we know is right, and God is there watching and recording to demonstrate His great mercy on us – the objects of His affection. Never underestimate the grandeur of the ability of God to use your rights as well as your wrongs in amazing ways.

13 And so it was, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and fled outside,

With all of the intrigue the world has seen, Joseph’s actions are all the more surprising. How many times have lovers planned ways of overthrowing homes, spouses, and even empires? If he wanted this woman, he could have turned the situation into a cunning plot that may bring him to freedom and even wealth. Instead, Joseph turns and runs.

In the Morning Bride by William Congreve, the actress Zara says this in Act III, “Heaven has no rage like love to hatred turned, Nor hell a fury like a woman scorned.” I wonder if Congreve was thinking of this verse after reading the account of Potiphar’s wife?

The woman is scorned by a slave more righteous than she, and so with his garment in her hand, she can now take out her fury in place of the passion she has lost…

14 that she called to the men of her house and spoke to them, saying, “See, he has brought in to us a Hebrew to mock us. He came into me to lie with me, and I cried out with a loud voice.

The term “Hebrew” hasn’t been used since Genesis 14:13 when it was first introduced into the pages of the Bible. In other words, this is only the second time it’s been used thus far in Scripture. If Israel is the national identity of the people, the term Hebrew is somewhat synonymous with Israel and yet something deeper. It is the calling of that national group.

Our national identity is American, but we as a people, first and foremost, should be “Christians.” This is the force and effect of the term Hebrew. When Jonah was asked who he was, his answer was, “I am a Hebrew; and I fear the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.”

He was identifying Himself with the collective group of people who were spiritually tied to the Lord, Jehovah. To Jonah, this identified the “why” of the circumstances which had occurred that had led to the question in the first place.

The term Hebrew is derived from Abraham’s great-great-great-great-grandfather Eber. Eber means “he who crossed over” and it signifies that he and his family are the ones who crossed over the Euphrates and away from Babel, the land of apostasy from all truth. This was more than just a physical crossing of a river, but a spiritual crossing over, hence the title being used first of Abraham.

Potiphar’s wife is probably calling him a “Hebrew” as a way of shaming him. In essence, she might be saying, “This guy calls himself a Hebrew. If that is a Hebrew, then what a bad thing being a Hebrew must be.” Joseph had done nothing wrong and yet he was being maligned by the use of his identity.

This is the same intent concerning the use of the word “Christian” in 1 Peter 4:16 – “Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this matter.” It is the biblical model that suffering for what is right is commendable.

Lord, the thought of suffering doesn’t make me tickle with joy
But to suffer for your name is the highest honour of all
And so give me the determination to a humble attitude employ
When suffering comes; yes Lord, on the day of such a call

Something important happens here for us to see. Whether you noticed it or not, Potiphar’s wife has indicted her husband in this verse. “See, he has brought in to us a Hebrew to mock us…” The accusation of Joseph’s actions falls on the one who appointed Joseph. This is the same thing that is seen in Jesus.

Paul, citing the 69th Psalm, shows the same attitude towards Christ as we see in this verse about Joseph and Potiphar – “For even Christ did not please Himself; but as it is written, ‘The reproaches of those who reproached You fell on Me.'” (15:3)

Joseph sets the example and the ultimate realization of it is found in the cross of Christ. Joseph was stripped of his garments and suffered shame in the process. Jesus was likewise stripped of His garments and bore the reproach of many who surrounded him. However, the accusation of Christ is an accusation against God.

The question we should then ask is, “Should we if we are wrongly accused of our faith as Christians, feel that we are above these things?” No! Rather, we should feel honoured if we suffer for having done right and maintained our integrity. In the case of Joseph, the very thing that he had run from is what he is accused of. And in the process, Potiphar shares in the blame.

“He came into me to lie with me, and I cried out with a loud voice.” All wrongs will be made right. Someday, Potiphar’s wife will stand in the presence of the Lord and receive her fair sentence as will we all. As Jesus said in Matthew 12 –

“But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give an account of it in the day of judgment. 37 For by your words you will be justified, and by your words, you will be condemned.”

Those who wrongly accuse us may have the temporary victory, but in the end, it is the faithful follower of Christ, who runs to God and away from sin, that will be exalted. Don’t forget this when it’s time to speak up, especially about moral issues which are so quickly degrading our society. God does have your back.

15 And it happened when he heard that I lifted my voice and cried out, that he left his garment with me, and fled and went outside.”

How would a lady explain having a man’s garments in her hand? A loud yell would do it. Verse 11 said that none of the men of the house was inside. The only way to feign innocence would be to claim she yelled for everyone to hear her, when in fact she knew that no one could.

But the story will work because it plausibly explains why she would have the garment when Joseph was stronger than she was.

II. The Oldest Trick – Passing the Buck

16 So she kept his garment with her until his master came home.

Potiphar’s wife is using Jacob’s garment to accuse him. This is a parallel to what happened to Jesus. In Luke 23:11, it says, “Then Herod, with his men of war, treated Him with contempt and mocked Him, arrayed Him in a gorgeous robe, and sent Him back to Pilate.”

Later in John 19, we read this –

“So then Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him. 2 And the soldiers twisted a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and they put on Him a purple robe. 3 Then they said, “Hail, King of the Jews!” And they struck Him with their hands. 4 Pilate then went out again, and said to them, “Behold, I am bringing Him out to you, that you may know that I find no fault in Him.” 5 Then Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, “Behold the Man!”

The robe of Jesus, first placed on Him by Herod and which was then taken off to scourge Him before being put back on Him, was used as an accusation against Him. In essence, it was to imply that he was a usurper of the ruler – who to Israel was God alone. By wearing a king’s garments, it implied that He was a King.

This is exactly what Potiphar’s wife is accusing Joseph of. By trying to sleep with her, he would usurp Potiphar’s authority because she was the one thing that was withheld from Joseph. Time and again, every detail is pointing to Jesus.

The meticulous work of God in using real details of real lives is simply amazing. In the case of Joseph, it’s even more so. Not only is he recorded to show us what would come in Christ, but also how God would deliver Israel in the future. But that deliverance of Israel is given to us to again show the work of Christ!

God is building upon each story in such an intricately marvellous way and every detail is about His entrance into the stream of humanity in the Person of Jesus. And yet, people pray to Mary, confess to popes and priests, and miss the mark of God’s astonishing love which is found in nail-scarred hands longingly held out to us.

17 Then she spoke to him with words like these, saying, “The Hebrew servant whom you brought to us came into me to mock me;

The accusation she said to those around her, she now states directly to Potiphar – “The Hebrew servant whom you brought to us…” This is exactly what Adam did to the Lord when he was confronted with his sin. In Genesis 3, we see the first example ever of passing the buck from one’s guilt to someone else –

“And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?” 12 Then the man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate.”

Potiphar’s wife, just like Adam, places the blame for her sin on him. And in turn, Joseph is the recipient of her deserved punishment. Fortunately for us, we too have a recipient for ours. Jesus will bear our guilt, just as Joseph will be forced to bear the guilt of this woman.

18 so it happened, as I lifted my voice and cried out, that he left his garment with me and fled outside.”

There is truth mixed with lies in this verse; statements that will convict an innocent man. The same happened with Jesus. He stood in front of several councils before His crucifixion and people came with testimony that was only partially true or which was misconstrued.

He had done no wrong, but He was tried and found guilty. The pattern is first seen in Joseph and ultimately realized in who he is picturing. Joseph is the falsely accused overseer of Potiphar’s house; Jesus is the falsely accused Overseer of God’s house.

And so here we have an amazing picture of man’s fall and redemption. Adam was found naked after disobeying God; Joseph was stripped of his garment; Jesus was stripped of His garment.

Adam blames God by saying He gave her the woman. Potiphar’s wife blames Potiphar, picturing God by saying he brought the Hebrew into them. And, the chief priests, scribes, and elders blame God as is noted in Matthew 27-

“He saved others; Himself He cannot save. If He is the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe Him. He trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now if He will have Him; for He said, ‘I am the Son of God.'” Matthew 27:42, 43

After Adam’s transgression, God covered him with the skins of an animal. After Joseph is cast into the pit, he will be brought out and clothed in garments of fine linen. And when Jesus was brought out of the tomb, he received His heavenly garments.

But even more, He now grants us the same white garments of righteousness, lost by Adam at the fall. In Christ, the circle is complete in returning man to a state of undefiled righteousness in the presence of God – pictured here as the events of Joseph’s life continue to unfold.

The call rings out “not guilty,” though I have sinned so many times
And I look and see a Man hanging bloody on a tree
My guilt was transferred to His cross thus excusing all my crimes
What kind of love has been poured out on undeserving me?

III. The King’s Prisoner

19 So it was when his master heard the words which his wife spoke to him, saying, “Your servant did to me after this manner,” that his anger was aroused.

Potiphar’s anger is aroused at what happened, but it doesn’t say at who. We infer that it is Joseph, but it’s not specific. It could have said, “His anger was aroused at Joseph” as the Bible often does. An example of this is when Moses is alone with the Lord.

“So the anger of the Lord was kindled against Moses, and He said: ‘Is not Aaron the Levite your brother? I know that he can speak well.'” Exodus 4:14

I believe that Joseph’s name is omitted because it pictures Christ. God’s anger was aroused at the sin that had occurred, but it was aroused uniquely in Christ. He became the Substitute for our sin. What we’ve done wrong was judged in Him. This is why Jesus, in the Garden of Gethsemane, said this –

“Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.” Luke 22:42

The cup of God’s wrath was handed to Jesus, and He drank it down in our place despite being innocent of any wrongdoing. Potiphar’s anger was aroused as well and he took it out on an innocent man. Looking at the next verse, we can see this more clearly…

20 Then Joseph’s master took him and put him into the prison, a place where the king’s prisoners were confined. And he was there in the prison.

Joseph was Potiphar’s property, and Potiphar is the captain of the executioners. If he believed that Joseph was truly guilty, he would certainly have had him executed. But because of the accusations of his wife, which couldn’t be substantiated, he took a course of action that shows us the substitutionary work of Jesus.

He sent Joseph to the place where the king’s prisoners were confined. In Hebrew, it is best ha Zohar, the Round House. It is a very unusual term that is only used eight times in the Bible and all eight are in this particular story and nowhere else.

The Jewish writer Mercer observes, “that it was made underground, and at the top of it was a hole which let in light, and at which they went into it.” It is a convincing description of what we would think of as the tomb of Jesus; a round area cut out of stone with an entrance that could be covered.

Joseph has taken the blame for what she did even though Potipher surely knew he was innocent. Jesus took the blame for what we have done, even though He is innocent. Every sin will be punished. It will either be in us or a Substitute. What this account seems to show is that precept. Even down the location – a round hole dug out of rock.

21 But the Lord was with Joseph and showed him mercy, and He gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison.

If the sentence of Joseph pictures the sentencing of Jesus, then the Lord’s presence with Joseph in that sentence is to be seen in the same way towards Jesus. In death, the Lord was with Him.

Joseph was never abandoned by the Lord, even though he suffered for a crime he didn’t commit. And Jesus was not left abandoned when He suffered for our crimes. The favour of the Lord was with Him and it remained with Him. Thus the words of the psalm are true, “His mercy endures forever.”

In Psalm 16:10, it says, “For You will not leave my soul in Sheol, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption.” Jesus was raised from the tomb to become the ruler of all of God’s kingdom. Joseph will be in prison, but he won’t be abandoned. Instead, he will be brought out and made ruler over all of Pharaoh’s kingdom.

22 And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners who were in the prison; whatever they did there, it was his doing.

Again, we’re being asked to view this from a prophetic perspective. There is no doubt about it. If all of the other aspects of what has happened have pointed to Jesus, then we can surely see the same in this verse as well. It is Jesus who has been given authority over all those who are in the prison of the tomb.

He has complete authority over all the souls of men in the grave. We take passages like this, and we make sermons about how to live nobly in difficult circumstances, which by the way is true, but we miss what God is trying to show us. The details of Joseph’s life were selected to show us the magnificence of the work of Jesus.

There isn’t a verse yet which hasn’t brought me closer to understanding  Him and His glory. If we get this right, and if we can focus on that, then all of the “living right” concepts will follow and the right living applications will be much more pronounced in each of us.

Jesus prevailed so that we can prevail. The Lord was with Joseph to show that the Lord was with Jesus. If we are in Christ, then the Lord is with us. Even in death, we can have the absolute assurance that He is the Overseer of our lives and our souls. Who wouldn’t live right with that kind of knowledge!

23 The keeper of the prison did not look into anything that was under Joseph’s authority, because the Lord was with him; and whatever he did, the Lord made it prosper.

Having taken everything that we have seen in this section and viewed it from the lens of the work of Christ, we can take this last verse and see it completely realized in Him. Christ was in the grave, the prison of Joseph if you will.

The Lord was with Him and whatever He did, the Lord made it prosper. Think on that as I read you this familiar passage from Isaiah which almost mirrors what we’ve seen in these last verses from Genesis 39 –

And they made His grave with the wicked—
But with the rich at His death,
Because He had done no violence,
Nor was any deceit in His mouth.
10 Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him;
He has put Him to grief.
When You make His soul an offering for sin,
He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days,
And the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand.
11 He shall see the labour of His soul, and be satisfied.
By His knowledge, My righteous Servant shall justify many,
For He shall bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great,
And He shall divide the spoil with the strong,
Because He poured out His soul unto death,
And He was numbered with the transgressors,
And He bore the sin of many,
And made intercession for the transgressors.

Hallelujah for the work of the Lord and for the beautiful pictures of that work which have been given to show us of His coming. Matthew Henry, who I don’t quote very often, stated this thought about today’s passage quite eloquently. Listen to what he says concerning the life of Joseph and how he pictures Jesus –

“Let us not forget, through Joseph, to look unto Jesus, who suffered being tempted, yet without sin; who was slandered, and persecuted, and imprisoned, but without cause; who by the cross ascended to the throne. May we be enabled to follow the same path in submitting and in suffering, to the same place of glory.”

All of these many stories, pictures, and patterns are wonderful to see and they tell us the truth and soundness of our faith, but without that faith, they are just interesting stories that seem to have no final goal or purpose. In God’s redemptive plan though, they come into focus.

First in the preparation, care, and redemption of the Jewish people, but even that only points to the greater work of Christ. If the redemption of Israel were the end of the story, it would be a sad tale for the rest of the world, but through them, God did something even more marvellous. He sent His Son, Jesus, to provide redemption to all mankind.

If you’ve never understood this beautiful work and how important it is to you, then give me a moment to share the love of God, which is found in Jesus Christ, with you. You too can be freed from the prison which holds all humans captive. And all because of Him…

Closing Verse: These six things the Lord hates,
Yes, seven are an abomination to Him:
17 A proud look,
A lying tongue,
Hands that shed innocent blood,
18 A heart that devises wicked plans,
Feet that are swift in running to evil,
19 A false witness who speaks lies,
And one who sows discord among brethren. Proverbs 6

Next Week Genesis 40:1-23 (The Spirits in Prison) (99th Genesis Sermon)

The Lord has you exactly where He wants you and He has a good plan and purpose for you. Call on Him and let Him do marvellous things for you and through you.

The Overseer in Prison

But it happened about this point
When Joseph went into the house where Potiphar did abide
To do his work in that lavish joint
And none of the men of the house was inside

That she caught him by his garment as she planned
Saying, “Lie with me.” But he denied
He left his garment in her hand
And fled and ran outside

And so it was when she looked
That he had left his garment in her hand
And fled outside, yes he booked
His 50-yard dash was quite grand

That she called to the men of her house
And spoke to them, as she said
“See, he has brought in to us a Hebrew to mock us
He came into me to lie with me… to take me to bed

And I cried out with a loud voice
I had to you see, I just had no choice

And it happened, when he heard
That I lifted my voice and cried out
That his garment to me was transferred
And he fled and went outside, scared no doubt

So she kept his garment with her
Until his master came home
Then she spoke to him with words like these
Saying, “Something has happened, Sweetie, while I was here alone

The Hebrew servant whom you brought to us
Came into me to mock me, let me tell you about the fuss

So it happened, as I lifted my voice and cried out
That he left his garment with me
And fled outside, scared no doubt
I’m telling the truth sweetie-pie. You do believe me?

So it was when his master heard the words of the deceitful planner
The words which his wife spoke to him
Saying, “Your servant did to me after this manner,”
That his anger was aroused, things were looking grim

Then Joseph’s master took him in kind
And put him into the prison
A place where the king’s prisoners were confined
And he was thereafter his mater’s anger had arisen

But the Lord was with Joseph alright
And showed him mercy you know
And He gave him favour in the sight
Of the keeper of the prison, yes this is so

And the keeper of the prison
Committed to Joseph’s hand
All the prisoners who were there
Joseph’s skills were noted as quite grand

Whatever they did there it was his doing
Because Joseph was honourable in all he was pursuing

The keeper of the prison did not look
Into anything that was under his authority
Because the Lord was with him in that darkened nook
He found favour in the Lord’s eyes, you see

And whatever he did, the Lord made it thrive
And so this is how, in prison, Joseph did survive

We, like Potiphar’s wife, are guilty too
But Jesus took our place
And now through Him, we can have life anew
Our condemned state, God will with eternal life replace

Let us never forget that high, high price
That was paid for us at Calvary
Where for our sins His shed blood did suffice
The payment made to set us free

Thank You, O God, for our Lord Jesus
And the marvellous work He accomplished for us

Hallelujah and Amen…

7 Ways To Develop The Right Attitude

If you want things to be different in your life. . .the number one thing you need to change is not your job, circumstances, environment, relationships or income. . .it’s YOU.

You must first change your attitude.  Now your attitude can be either good or bad.  That’s why I want to be very specific.

Your attitude is determined by the collection of the dominant thoughts in your mind.  So in determining the proper kind of attitude for change. . .we must look at Philippians 2:5 in the New Living Translation which says:

“You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.”

Years ago, people were wearing bracelets with the initials of a very probing question.  “WWJD,” asks “What Would Jesus Do.”

Before you ever do. . .you think.  So perhaps a more probing question would be.

“WWJT” or “What would Jesus think.”

I want to repeat a phrase because I want to make sure you grasp the full implications of the phrase.

Before you ever do anything. . .you need to think. . .like He would think!

The great news is that you can know with absolute certainty what Jesus thinks.  All that is required is for you to:  Read Your Bible…Do What It Says.

Napoleon Hill, the author of Think And Grow Rich once said:

“What the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve."

However, if you have a negative and/or bad attitude. . .you will not conceive or believe it and you most certainly. . .will not achieve your goals.

Success will never come to you. . .unless you’re willing to change your attitude. . .which will change by what you feed your mind.

It’s also important to understand that success will never manifest around you until it’s established within you.

Developing the right kind of attitude within you. . .is a scriptural and spiritual assignment.

Here are the seven ways to develop the right kind of attitude.

1.         Where do you get the right kind of attitude?

Ephesians 4:23 in the Amplified Bible says:

“And be constantly renewed in the spirit of your mind [having a fresh mental and spiritual attitude].”

The scripture gets very specific when discussing the kind of attitude you should have.

Philippians 2:5 in the New Living Translation says:

“You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.”

The Contemporary English Version of Philippians 2:5 puts it this way:

“And think the same way that Christ Jesus thought.”

You may be thinking… “that sounds good but how do I receive or develop that kind of attitude.”

Seven words.

Read your Bible. . .do what it says.

If you’re having trouble in your marriage. . .you must get rid of your old attitudes about your spouse. . .before you can embrace a new mindset.

If you’re having trouble with your children. . .you must get rid of your old attitudes about them. . .before you can embrace a new mindset.

If you’re having trouble with your boss and/or job. . .you must get rid of your old attitudes about him/her. . .before you can embrace a new mindset.

You must change. . .renovate your thinking before you can replace the old with the new.

Romans 12:2 in the King James Version says:

“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

According to Strong’s Concordance, the Greek word for renewing is anakainōsis (G342) which means:  “renewing, renovation.”

When you renovate a house. . .you may take out the old unsafe electrical wiring and put in the new.  You pull out the old flooring and add in the new flooring.  You are replacing what isn’t wanted with what is.

If you’re renewing your mind. . .you take out the old way of thinking and put in the new.  That’s why I love the New Living Translation of Romans 12:2 which says:

“. . .Let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. . .”

You and no one else. . .brings the change in your life. . .you determines your attitude and the kind of day you will have.

2. Before proper planning preparing your attitude for tomorrow.

Seven things for you to do before you go to sleep each night.

First, create a to-do list of the things you plan to accomplish tomorrow.  List them by priorities based on your goals in the six major areas of your life. . .spiritual, family, financial, physical, mental and social.

Be like Santa. . .make your list. . .check it twice.

Second, journal the great things that happened to you during the day.  Regardless of how your day went. . .you have something to rejoice over.  If nothing else and I mean nothing else. . .you have the ability to read and hear the words I’m speaking from my notes.

I GUARANTEE … you’ll sleep better at night if you end your day by Praising God.

Third, create a nightly confession about tomorrow being the best day of your life.  Something like this.

"Heavenly Father, I thank you <<date>> will be the greatest <<day>> of my life...a day filled with opportunities beyond my imagination and expectation.  A day filled with revelatory insight and divine connections.  My desire is for you to be glorified in everything I do on <<day, date>>.  In the mighty name of Jesus. Amen."

Fourth, never go to bed mad or frustrated with your spouse or children.  If it’s something that can’t be resolved instantly, write out the problem briefly on a sheet of paper.  Pray over it. . .lay it on your nightstand. . .and ask God to deal with it while He’s giving you a sweet sleep.

Proverbs 3:24 says:

“When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.”

Fifth, clean up. . .pick up. . .so you’ll be ready to get up.  Do the dishes and clean up your living area before going to bed.  Believe it or not, you’ll be glad you did in the morning.  It may seem like a small thing. . .but it gives you a better start on the day when you don’t have a lot of leftover chores to face first thing.

Sixth lay out what you plan to wear tomorrow.  This will save you time in the morning, eliminate indecision, wipe out time delays and ultimately save you some frustration.

Seventh, plan how you will dress your mind tomorrow.  Layout what CDs or teachings you will listen to on your smartphone.  Never just settle for what happens to be airing on your commute. . .it needs to be a conscious decision on your part.

3.         Begin your day with happy hour.  I’m not talking about alcoholic spirits. . .I’m talking about getting high with the Holy Spirit. . .during the first hour of your day.

My scriptural guide for the morning is found in Psalm 5:3 in the New International Version which says:

“In the morning, O Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation."

My morning expectation brings daily manifestation and His rewards.

Proverbs 24:14 in the Amplified Bible says:

“So shall you know skilful and godly Wisdom to be thus to your life; if you find it, then shall there be a future and a reward, and your hope and expectation shall not be cut off."

Many mornings. . .I get ready for the day by listening to “O Happy Day” by the Edwin Hawkins Singers. . .because that’s what I’m going to have … a Happy Day.

Begin each day filled with supernatural expectations about the manifestation of God’s presence, peace, protection, promises, power, promotion and provision.

And by the way, it’s not unusual for me to play “O Happy Day” three, four or five times consecutively.

Begin every day with a positive expectancy about supernatural favour, divine connections, revelatory insight and yes, and even your goals being accomplished.

Let me ask you a question.

Do you expect to feel His presence during your prayer, Bible reading and meditation time each morning?

If not, why not?  Maybe it’s because of the way you’re beginning your day.

4.         “Keep the main thing. . .the main thing.”  Stephen Covey in his powerful book “Seven Secrets Of Highly Effective People” said:

“The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.”

If you have not read this book . . .I strongly encourage you to do so.

The main thing. . .is another way of saying “stay focused.”

Jesus was focused.  He knew why He was here.

Luke 19:10 says:

“For the Son of man is come to seek and save that which was lost.”

Jesus stayed focused on His mission. . .He kept the main thing the main thing.

John 9:4 in The Living Bible says:

“All of us must quickly carry out the task assigned us by the one who sent me for there is little time left before the night falls and all work comes to an end.”

Earlier in this teaching, I suggested you create a daily “to-do list.”  This list should be a reflection of your goals and the timeline you’ve created to accomplish them on a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly plan.

You don’t have to be a rocket scientist or computer geek to break down your goals into a doable plan.  If you have difficulty. . .just send me an email and I will help.  However, remember the word “concise” when emailing me.

When you’re accomplishing things on your to-do list. . .it pumps you up and gives you a whole new attitude about your ability to accomplish the things God has stirred in your spirit.

You will also find it beneficial to create and monitor your own “not-to-do list.”  Things such as:

Don’t spend time talking with negative people. . .if you have a choice.

Stay away from news programs that fill your mind with negative events.

Be careful of time vampires. . .who will suck the very time out of your day and life.

I could go on. . .but I believe you will notice that I just suggest staying away from negative people and events. . .again, where you have a choice.

What kind of friends do I want to hang around with?  You can find the answer by reading The Message Bible translation of 3 John 2 which says:

“We're the best of friends, and I pray for good fortune in everything you do, and for your good health—that your everyday affairs prosper, as well as your soul!”

Negative people tend to break your focus and hinder your ability to keep the main thing the main thing.

5.         What you sow you will REAP but not what you may be thinking.  This is not primarily about seedtime and harvest though it could be.

REAP stands for “Recognition, Encouragement, Appreciation and Praise.”  There will be times when you will need to engage in self-talk and motivation to keep your attitude where it needs to be.

If you don’t have a domestic support staff. . .meaning a spouse or children who can encourage you by speaking a word in season. . .by bringing a little positive sunshine in your attitude. . .here are three things you should do.

First, recognize the role you play in motivating and encouraging yourself.

1 Samuel 30:6 says:

“And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the LORD his God.”

In times of great trouble, danger and distress. . .when all seemed lost. . .the scripture says that David encouraged himself in the Lord.

David and his men returned from battle to find the enemy had stolen their wives, children, possessions and valuables.  All they found in their camp was the smouldering remains from the fires of enemy invaders.

David’s men. . .who had been so loyal to him . . .were ready to turn on him and stone him to death. . .but the scripture says “David encouraged himself in the Lord.”

Just so you know. . .there will be moments where you need to encourage and recognize yourself.

Second, you may have to appreciate your efforts because nobody else does.  So it’s just you and the Lord.

1 Corinthians 16:18 in The Living Bible says:

“They have been a wonderful encouragement to me, as they have been to you. You must show your appreciation to all who serve so well.”

Third, Praise God for what He has done and is doing through your life.

Psalm 35:28 in the Amplified Bible offers some pretty good advice:

“And my tongue shall talk of Your righteousness, rightness, and justice, and of [my reasons for] Your praise all the day long.”

Without question, if you want to feel the presence of the Lord fast, then start praising Him.

Recognition, appreciation and praise. . .bring encouragement which affects your attitude.  There was a time in my life when I created my awards ceremony recognizing what God had allowed me to accomplish.

6.         Be a doer. . .not a talker. . .not a try. . .but a doer.  The best way to develop a God-kind of attitude is by being a doer.

Just having a positive mental attitude is not enough.  I’ve met some super positive people who never accomplish a thing in their lives. . .because they weren’t doers of the Word.

You may have read hundreds of books on having a positive mental attitude, heard thousands of sermons, watched dozens of Christian television programs, attended motivational seminars and Holy Spirit conferences, run around the sanctuary of your church, fallen out in the spirit BUT if you aren’t doing—PRACTICING what you’ve heard then you are deceiving yourself.

James 1:22 says:

“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”

According to Strong’s Concordance, the word doer is the Greek work poiētēs (G4163) and it means:

“a maker, a producer, author,  a doer, performer; one who obeys or fulfils the law.”

Nowhere in that definition do we read where a doer is a talker.

James 1:22 in the Amplified Bible says:

“But be doers of the Word (obey the message), and not merely listening to it; betraying yourselves [into deception by reasoning contrary to the truth.].”

“Obey the message.”  What is the message that God wants you to obey?  He wants you to do what He says.

When Peter heard Jesus say “Come” he received the authority to get out of the boat, however, nothing would have ever happened if he just heard the word.  It was only when Peter became a doer of the word that he was able to get out of the boat.

The word Peter heard gave him more than a positive attitude it “empowered” him but still he had to take the first step.  God has given us His Word to energize our faith. . .to get us out of the boat.

It’s time for each of us to stop talking about what we’re going to do and just do it.

When you do. . .you accomplish. . .which not only gives you personal satisfaction. . .it gives your Heavenly Father pleasure in you.

7.         The God-kind of attitude will allow you to do what others say can’t be done.

The right kind of attitude. . .the kind Jesus had. . .will allow you to persist through adversity until you gain the victory.  No matter what the naysayers. . .say.

A six-year-old boy was sent home from school with a note from his teacher recommending that he be removed from school because he was “too stupid to learn.”  The boy was Thomas Edison

In 1929 movie studio mogul Samuel Goldwyn was furious with his casting director for arranging a screen test of an unknown actress.  He said:  “What are you guys trying to do to me?  You think I’m going to hire a dame with those big pop-eyes who talks funny like she does?”

Several years later, Samuel Goldwyn paid top dollar for that young woman to star in some of his hit movies.  Her name:  Betty Davis.

Englishman David Puttnam offered his latest screenplay to Columbia Pictures only to receive this response.  “I’m sorry to tell you this has no validity at all in the American marketplace, because of the style and tone as well as the subject matter.”

Later, that motion picture Chariots of Fire won the 1981 Oscar for Best Picture.

How about this quote?

“The cheek of every American must tingle with shame as he reads the silly, flat, and dish-watery utterances of a man who has to be pointed out to intelligent foreigners as President of the United States.”

The quote was from the Chicago Times. . .in 1865. . .the day after Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address.

Someone once said:

“The world is moving so fast these days that the man who says it can't be done is generally interrupted by someone doing it.”

Never let anyone else’s words or demeanour affect your attitude and purpose in life.

I used to have a cross-stitch quote that said:

“The greatest joy in life is doing what others say can’t be done.”

How do you do it?  Developing, maintaining and strengthening the God-kind of attitude.

James 5:16 in the Amplified Bible  says:

". . .The earnest (heartfelt, continued) prayer of a righteous man makes tremendous power available [dynamic in its working]."

Tap into this power. . .it’s an attitude changer.

Help From Above

Welcome to the last week of November 2021. We bless God for being faithful at all times and in all situations.

This is to us a week of HELP FROM ABOVE

“I will lift my eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth”

(Psalm 121:1-2)

Help from above is a help that cannot be stopped by any mortal. It is a help that cannot be mixed with sorrow. It is a help that causes you to be a wonder to many. It is a help that puts your enemy into confusion. It is a help that saves you from shame like the widow of Zarephath. It is a help that delivers unto you victory which your natural capacity and experience cannot give as it did for the Israelites in Joshua 10:11. It is a help that empowers you to do the supernatural just as an old prophet Elijah outrun a chariot in a race of 27 miles (1 Kings 18:46). It is a help that never fails as it comes on time, not too early and not too late. It is a help that fits the purpose it is meant to serve. It is a help that brings restoration. It is a help that puts an end to fruitless efforts as it did for Peter in Luke 5:1-5. It is the help that removes all limitations from every aspect of your life. It is a help that turns scarcity and famine into abundance as it did to the city of Samaria (2 Kings 7:1-8). It is a help that sets you free from bondage. It is a help that makes your glory shine despite efforts of the power of darkness against your shining. It is a help that gives you healing from long time sickness as it did to the woman with the issue of blood for 12 years (Mark 5:25-34). It is a help that breaks all protocol to favour you as it did to Joseph who became a prime minister in a country where he did not have citizenship status. It is a help that turns barrenness to fruitfulness as we see in the life of Sarah, Hannah and Elizabeth. It is the help that makes a young man finds a good wife that is met for him and a young woman to get a good husband that will not destroy her. My advice to you is that you should be careful about where or whom you get help from. Stop seeking help where there is none, or from the wrong source or help that are useless to your need. In our anchor scripture, the psalmist is quite aware of this hence he says his help will come from the Lord who makes heaven and the earth. The person who has the power, wisdom, understanding and knowledge to create heaven and earth also has what it takes to meet the needs of all the creatures therein. This God attends to the minute and detailed needs of a tiny sparrow so He is there to attend to you who has more value than the sparrow. Meanwhile, endeavour to stay away from sin, have absolute confidence in God, pray to Him always while you continuously praise Him. You will not be put to shame in Jesus name as every blessing comes your way. I declare you more than a conqueror this week and beyond in Jesus name.

God bless you

TO GOD BE THE GLORY

 To God be the glory

Great things He has done
So loved He the world that He gave us His Son
Who yielded His life an atonement for sin
And opened the life-gate that all may go in
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord
Let the earth hear His voice
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord
Let the people rejoice
Come to the Father
Through Jesus the Son
Give Him the glory
Great things He has done
Oh yes
O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood
To every believer the promise of God
The vilest offender who truly believes
That moment from Jesus a pardon receives
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord
Let the earth hear His voice
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord
Let the people rejoice
Come to the Father
Through Jesus the Son, yeah, yes
Give Him the glory
Great things He has done
O yes...
Great things He has taught us, great things He has done
And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son
But purer, and higher, and greater will be
Our wonder, our worship, when Jesus we see
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord
Let the earth hear His voice
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord
Let the people rejoice
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord
Let the earth hear His voice
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord
Let the people rejoice
Come to the Father
Through Jesus the Son (give Him the glory)
Give Him the glory
Great things He has done, yeah, yeah!

WITHSTAND TO STAND

WITHSTAND TO STAND

A Sermon by Rev. Dr  I. D. Samuel

Presented on 8th November 2021

At a PFN Ward F, Jos North LGA Fellowship

 Plateau State.

Scripture: Ephesians 6:13 GNT. So put on God's armour now! Then when the evil day comes, you will be able to resist the enemy's attacks; and after fighting to the end, you will still hold your ground.

Ephesians 6:13 KJV. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

I. WHEREFORE TAKE UNTO YOU THE WHOLE ARMOR OF GOD.

A. Wherefore is the wherefore, therefore? Why do we need the whole armour of God?

1. Because we are in a life and death conflict with an enemy who is bent on our destruction.

2. He does not abide by any rules of battle. He holds to the saying "All is fair in love and war."

3. He will use any devise or scheme to destroy you.

4. As a representative of Jesus Christ, you are one of his primary targets.

5. This is not a physical conflict, but spiritual.

a. He seeks to draw me into the physical arena, for there he has a decided advantage.

b. As soon as he can get me in the flesh, he can work me over good.

6. I cannot fight this battle with physical weapons.

a. It is not a matter of self-control.

b. I may count to ten before I react, but that does not guarantee the right reaction.

c. I may try to mesmerize myself to change my automatic responses, but that will break down.

d. The little red "I think I can" engine will not be able to pull me over the hill.

e. I would like to think that a positive attitude and strong self-resolve will win the battle for me, but such is not to be.

7. I need help from the outside, the help of the Holy Spirit.

a. Paul acknowledged, "In me, that is in my flesh, there dwells no good thing."

B. The battle is spiritual, and it is the realm of the spirit that the battle is won or lost.

1. It is of utmost importance that we utilize the spiritual weapons at our disposal to fight this battle.

2. Paul wrote to the Corinthians:

2CO 10:3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:

2CO 10:4 (For the weapons of our warfare [are] not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds;)

2CO 10:5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

3. Jesus the Captain of our salvation, has already engaged the foe and defeated him.

4. Paul speaks of His victory over the spiritual forces of darkness in his letter to the Colossians

COL 2:15 [And] having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

C. Paul speaks of the whole armour of God.

1. As we look at this armour of God, we notice that there is nothing there to protect our backside.

a. This means that God does not intend for you to turn and try to run from the enemy.

b. The minute you try to run from the battle you are defenceless.

II. PAUL'S BATTLE COMMAND TO THE EPHESIANS. "THAT YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO WITHSTAND IN THE EVIL DAY." THE WORD TRANSLATED WITHSTAND MIGHT BETTER BE TRANSLATED AS "STAND YOUR GROUND."

A. There is tremendous pressure in our world today to try to get us as Christians to back off.

1. We must back off from saying that homosexuality is a sin, and those who practice it are going to hell.

a. Adultery is a sin, and those who practice it are going to hell.

b. Murder is sin and those who murder are going to hell.

c. Rape is a sin, and those who rape are going to hell.

d. We must back off from preaching against sin, for that offends people.

e. That unbelief is a sin, and those who do not believe in Jesus Christ as Lord are going to hell.

d. In a prominent pulpit in Southern California, where they seek to have a seeker-friendly church, the minister recently declared that the congregation would never hear the word sin mentioned from that pulpit.

f. The word sin is an offensive word to the world.

2. We must back off from saying that Jesus is the only way to eternal life.

a. We must say that all roads lead to God.

b. We are insulting people of other beliefs when we say that there is one God and one mediator between God and man, the man Christ Jesus.

c. We must not say that Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life, and no man can come to the Father but by Him.

d. This is too narrow and bigoted and might foster hate crimes against people of other beliefs.

3. I am not motivated by hate when I preach the gospel, that is the spin the White House spin masters are trying to declare.

a. It is the love of Christ that constrains me, for we judge that if one died for all, then all are dead and damned who do not know Jesus Christ.

b. We preach to them that they might not perish, but have everlasting life.

c., interestingly, all of the attacks are coming against the preaching of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

d. I have not heard the White House press secretary denounce the tremendous conscription campaign's being carried on by the Moslem's. The Moslem's seem to me to be promoting hate, and they are the ones that are promoting terrorist attacks, and calling for the destruction of America.

e. One of the congressmen has not written to his colleagues suggesting that something is done to stop the attempt of the New Age movement to convert the world to their worship of mother earth, which is nothing more than Hinduism. But he is worried that Christians are seeking to convert Hindu's to Christianity and we may have to consider some kind of legislation to curb this kind of activity.

f. In the face of all of the pressure that is being put on the church today, we must not back down.

B. "And having done all to stand."

1. We must stand up to the world, the flesh and the devil.

2. To be able to do this we will need the whole armour of God.

3. As I look at the whole armour, I am confident that all that I might ever need to gain the victory has been provided for me.

THE COMMANDED BLESSING

Numbers 23:19-20(NLT) “19God is not a man, so he does not lie. He is not human, so he does not change his mind. Has he ever spoken and failed to act? Has he ever promised and not carried it through? 20Listen, I received a command to bless; God has blessed, and I cannot reverse it!”

The thing is God’s already commanded His blessing upon us all, and it cannot be reversed, because God cannot lie and does not change his mind concerning His good plan for your life.

If God has made a promise, He’s good for it. But, we need to be where God’s commanded blessing is supposed to manifest for our lives. God had to ask Abram to separate himself from His folks, before God’s divine plan and blessing could manifest in His life.

"The Lord had said to Abram, “Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you. 2 I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others. 3 I will bless those who bless you and curse those who treat you with contempt. All the families on earth will be blessed through you.” - Genesis 12:1-3

Abram's obeyed God's instruction to leave the comfort of his family household and everything he is familiar with, to go to a place he did not know, was prompted by his trust in God, and faith in God's trustworthiness, because he knew God cannot lie.

And God rewarded the obedience big time. He blessed him and Abram him into a great nation according to the promise.

Are you where God’s called you to be? Are doing what God is called you to be doing? Are you walking in obedience to His commandments? All through Scriptures, we see that Obedience is the hinge on which the blessings of God swings.

Most times, folks don't experience and enjoy the fullness of God's commanded blessings in their lives, because of unbelief, doubt and disobedience. In that case, our prayer should be for God to reveal an in-depth knowledge of who He is,  His power, and His plans for our lives. And when we receive this revelation, we then begin to understand who God is and what He is capable of doing.

We get so caught up in everything else going on in and around our lives, that we miss those moments of God's amazing revelation to truly appreciate His awesomeness and abilities!

God's commanded blessing is there for all, but we must be willing and obedient to partake of them.

Hallelujah!!!

MINISTERIAL ETHICS

TOWDAH BIBLE ACADEMY JOS

CITY OF HIPE ASSEMBLY INC.

MINISTERIAL ETHICS

INTRODUCTION

Ministerial Ethics is a course of study that establishes Ethical Guidelines, Principles, and Code for Ministers in the Vineyard of God. It is essential in the lives of the Ministers, moulding the behaviour, character; conduct and integrity of the Minister to enable him to attain a successful Ministry.

The imperativeness of Ministerial Ethics in the discharge of the Minister’s daily functions cannot be overstressed. A Minister who lacks a thorough and up-to-date knowledge of Ministerial Ethics cannot go too far.

For a Minister to attain optimum performance in Ministry, he must give himself to the study of, not only the Holy Bible and Christian but also Ministerial Ethics.

A Minister of Jesus Christ, called by God to proclaim the gospel and gifted by the Holy Spirit to pastor the Church, should dedicate himself to conduct his ministry according to biblical and ethical guidelines and universally accepted practices.

The minister’s service should be acceptable to God and beneficial to the Church in particular and the Christian Community at large.

The Minister’s Personal and Family Life.

1.0 In the Old Testament, men that serve at the Altar are known as Priests or Levites. In the New Testament era, the general term MINISTER refers to the Apostles, Pastors, Evangelists and Caretakers.

2.0 A Minister must ensure that his soul is saved for the Kingdom. It will be erroneous for a Minister to save the souls of his large congregation, while his soul perishes in hell. Jesus is concerned more about our walk than our talk. Matt. 7::21-23. 1 Cor. 9: 27.

3.0 “Therefore, you and your sons with you shall attend to your priesthood for everything at the altar and behind the veil, and you shall serve. I give your priesthood to you as a gift… “ Num. 18:7.

So, I will consecrate the tabernacle of the meeting and the Altar. I will also consecrate both Aaron and his sons to minister to Me as a priest”. Exod. 29:44.

Two facts emerge from the above passages:

Firstly, a Minister is the representative of the people to God and also a representative of God to the people. He must carry the people’s petitions, concerning blessings, deliverance, protection and healing to God. The people also look up to him to return to them with positive answers.

In other words, the Minister should recognize his position in the Church as God’s spokesman and mouthpiece through whom all blessings flow to the congregation. He should therefore purge himself by confessing and renouncing every secret or hidden  of shame, not walking in craftiness or handling the word of God deceitfully (Eccl. 12: 14; Rom, 1:8, 2 Cor. 4:2)

Secondly, the household or family of the Minister must be involved in the Ministry work. His wife and children should be his partners in God’s business. Examples are taken from Aaron and his sons as well as Joshua and his household.

The Minister and his sons have been chosen, sanctified, set apart and authorised by God to work in the Holy Altar of God. Sons of a Minister who keep themselves are permitted to join their Minister father, in all sacred services, including preparation of the Lord’s supper.

PROPER BEHAVIOUR

It is a great privilege to be a Minister of the Gospel and a shepherd to a group of God’s people. Deep and loving relationships can develop between the Minister and people provided the Minister is careful to observe some necessary limitations that his role and position impose.

A Minister should show equal concern for all members, just as God have no favourites or partiality “For there is no respect of persons with God: But if ye have respect for persons YE commit “SIN”. (Rom. 2:11, James 2:9).

The Minister should always work in close harmony with his Church Officers, Co-workers, and Committees, and seek to build peaceful and loving relationships with himself and all people.

Ministers, avoid handling church Funds. At the pioneering stages, when it may be inevitable, he must keep accurate and detailed records of his administration of Church funds. As soon as practicable he should delegate this responsibility to other trustworthy and competent persons in the Church. As a good manager, he must know the state of all departments of the Church and its financial position. He also has ultimate responsibility for all officials, who administer Church Funds.

Every Minister should be prudent, courteous and trustworthy in maintaining the confidence of pastoral work. People’s confession of sinful behaviour and confidential statements during counselling must be treated as a sacred trust. He should keep the secret of the Church and members’ secret.

The Pastor should not start rumours or repeat uncomplimentary things about anyone. An indiscreet comment by a Minister will be remembered after the most eloquent sermon has been forgotten.

Be wary of any entanglements with members of the opposite sex. Counselling members of the opposite sex must not be done in private or late in the Night. Do not inquire into private matters. Intimate matters are best handled by counsellors of the same sex.

The Minister should avoid transporting a member of the opposite sex unaccompanied, or offer the person a seat in the rear of the car if no one else can come along as a third person.

A Minister should maintain regular contact or pastoral visitation to keep in touch with those to whom he preaches week to week. The Lord always sent out his disciples two by two. You should always accompany with you someone else when going to a member’s house.

In visitation, you should not appear to be in a hurry. The Minister should listen to the person he visited. Counsel with them, read the Scriptures and pray with them. If they are sick anoint them with oil and pray the prayer of faith so that the sick will receive healing from God.

As the Church grows, it will become impossible for the Pastor to do all the visitation personally, so he must develop a system that will adequately and caringly this vital pastoral responsibility.

THE MINISTER AND THE PULPIT

A Minister must be a loving shepherd, able to preach and lead public services so that people will be saved, filled with the Holy Spirit, and caused to grow to be like Christ, through his personal public Ministry.

In the Pulpit, and elsewhere, only the highest standards of ethics and morals are rarely appropriate for a Church Minister. He is the representative of Christ before the people. His language, dignity, modesty and upright behaviour must be above reproach (1Tim. 3: 1-7; 1Pet. 2:12).

The Minister: should do nothing that will unnecessarily draw attention to himself in the Pulpit. He should avoid mannerisms and habits that are distracting, annoying, offensive or self-promoting showmanship in the Pulpit. These are unacceptable and unscriptural. Our conduct should focus attention on Jesus Christ. Because a Church Minister cannot see himself as others see him. He is well-advised to discreetly seek the opinion of a discerning friend or his wife and be ready to accept constructive criticism.

A Minister must never misuse the power of the pulpit to manipulate people. Take “POT SHOPS”, at individuals or stir up inappropriate emotions in the people. The pulpit is holy, and it should be consecrated only to the purpose of Christ by a Minister functioning as a faithful ambassador of the King.

The Minister has an ethical obligation to prepare the messenger and messages carefully. Conduct the worship services to build up and encourage the people to worship God in spirit and truth, and an atmosphere of joy. Teach them to know God and enjoy his presence.

A Minister must take time to read his Bible and other books and articles. This will give more depth to your sermons. Allow adequate time to pray and study in preparing the messengers and the message.

He must never exploit the gift of the spirit for personal gain or popularity. He must never use the word of knowledge to gain power over people, or the gifts of healing to make money, nor should he misuse the gift of faith or the gift of miracle to promote his name or build fame for his own Ministry.

When operating in the power of God, a Minister needs to be careful that he does not defile God’s holiness by interposing his fleshly personality. We don’t want to be like Moses who, by his angry outburst, was judged unworthy to go into the land of promise (Num.20: 7-12).

The Minister must be willing to have his prophecies judged and be ready to admit his error and admixture when exercising the gift of the spirit. The practice of prophesying people out of their Church into your Church is not only unethical but brings one in danger of divine judgement (Jer. 5:31; 29:9)

Glorifying, Blasting and Rejoicing in the exercising Power of God, over demons is forbidden by Jesus. Exorcism is not a spectator sport and giving prominence to demonic activity and excessive attention to ‘deliverance’ may glorify Satan than God.

To Prevent Pride, Causing His Fall, Pastor must always recognize other Ministries as being greater than his own (Phil.2:3). To publicly criticize and name other Ministers in the guise of being God’s “prophets” sent to expose sin in the camp is fraught with many dangers, such as pride, arrogance, vindictiveness and self-righteousness.

A Visiting Speaker: should be introduced by the Minister simply and graciously, rather than extravagantly or pompously (Acts 12:22; 1Cor. 3:5). The Minister should not comment at the end of the sermon, other than perhaps brief, warm affirmations.

THE MINISTER AND HIS CONGREGATION

The Minister must be properly furnished in the words of God and conversant with the doctrines of the Church so that he can properly admonish and guide members by God’s laws and the Church regulations.

A Minister should avoid keeping unduly too long in his service conducts. Rather, people should be taught to know God and enjoy His presence and worship God in spirit and truth in an atmosphere of joy.

In sermon preparation, the Minister should allow adequate time to pray and study his Bible and other books/articles. The motive is to produce qualitative and lively messages that satisfy the spiritual and physical needs of the people. Your sermon should “be brief, alive and full of power (making it active, operative, energizing and effective); it is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating to the dividing line of the breath of life (soul) and (the immoral), exposing and sifting and analyzing and judging the very thoughts and purposes of the heart” (Heb 4:12).

Speak the Word of God. Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, exhort and rebuke with all longsuffering and teaching. (2Tim. 4:2)

A Minister must not be a respecter of persons, courting the favour of the influential or the generous members which is tantamount to favouritism, nor should he be partial or tribal in his judgments. The problems of the Church and Members should be a priority of the Minister and he should show equal love to members whether rich or poor. A well-grounded Minister can assist the poor members to become rich, spiritually and materially.

The Minister must avoid acts and words that scatter the Church. He should not allow himself, his wife or his children to be at the centre of the crisis, gossip, whispering and slandering in the Church.

Should misunderstanding or disputes arise, the Minister and his family must pray and make efforts for settlement and not fuel the crisis.

Self-assessment is vital for the Minister. Let other people say what they know about you. Christ was an example of self-assessment when He asked His disciples, “Whom say ye that I am” Matt. 16: 13-16.

It is imperative to note that the assessment of the Minister’s job performance is based on the following growth parameters:

i. Spiritual growth

ii. Membership Growth

iii. Financial Growth

There is a strong correlation between these three growth parameters. They are dependent on each other. When a Church is spirit-filled, there you will find salvation; deliverance, healing, signs and wonders, and multitudes would come to embrace the great light. The multitudes become veritable channels and resources for the infrastructural development of the Church and expansion of God’s Kingdom (Obed. 17).

THE MINISTER AND HIS COLLEAGUES

A Minister must recognize other Apostles, Pastors, Evangelists and Teachers as his colleagues, fellow prisoners and workers for the kingdom, and realize that he is always a part of a wider group of Ministers. He should foster good relations with every other Minister who is building the kingdom of God and regard it as a privilege to stand alongside a fellow Minister, especially at times of difficulty, attack or discouragement.

A Minister should always ask after and feel genuinely concerned about his colleagues to share experiences. He should pray always for the peace and progress of the ministries of his colleagues and visit one another to take counsel and learning. Every Minister needs a Barnabas, son of encouragement. He needs someone he can share with intimately. He goes to him continually with problems and difficult situations. Praying, counselling and holding the colleague’s confidence were major duties of Barnabas.

A Minister is also a follower. Knowledge is acquired not only by attending lectures, reading books or earning degrees but by first watching successful colleagues lead in action. He responds to the inspiration of his colleague and emulates their examples (1 Cor. 4: 16; Phil. 3: 17; 4:9)

The Minister must have personal friendliness, good human relations and love for his colleagues. A lack of interest or an unfriendly attitude is an obstacle in the path of achievement and growth.

Any feeling of superiority or inferiority complex must be avoided by the Minister. He should not backbite or slander his colleagues and their wives… “But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another” (Gal. 5: 15). He should not poison the minds of his children or Church members by discussing his colleagues and their wives in their presence. This is to avoid revenge and rebellion.

A Minister should keep an open heart and open doors for his colleagues. Acts of suppression or oppression of colleagues should be avoided.

Seniority: The Minister must obey and honour those who are his seniors in the Ministry regardless of their age. He should always cooperate. Any system where there is no orderliness, seniority or ranks, the system disorganizes sooner or later. There must be stated orderliness in rank and file procession, as the hierarchy exists even in heaven. The status quo and levels of authority must be strictly maintained and followed. No matter how high the Minister may think of himself he should keep his grade, level and official responsibility.

A Minister should avoid the temptation of treating his colleagues as competitors to gain a Church, receive the honour, or achieve statistical success. He should refrain from speaking disparagingly about the person or work of any other Minister, especially his predecessor or successor. He is to enhance the ministry of his successor by refusing to interfere in any way with the Church he formerly served. He is to return to a former Church station for professional services such as weddings and funerals, only if invited by the resident Pastor or a member through the Pastor.

THE MINISTER IN SITUATIONS OF CONFLICT

Conflicts can be defined as fighting or war, a state of disagreement or arguments between people, groups or countries. Conflicts could also mean a time of general disagreement among members, between the Minister and members, Ministers and elders or officers of the Church. It is a state of confusion in the Church of God.

The following factors can lead to conflicts. The self, rumour/gossip mill, poor communication, discrimination and favouritism, poor system of seeking redress, policy issues not properly defined, lack commitment, poor knowledge or no knowledge of events and issues, not seeking God’s will. Other factors include misunderstanding, misinterpretation, confusion and lack of acceptable answers.

Problem-solving is the costliest and perhaps the least rewarding function of leadership. It consumes time and seems to yield very little fruit. It is, however, a very important and very difficult job.

Many problems arise from misunderstanding people and situations. Misunderstanding includes the inability to see clearly or to see all the factors involved in mistakes as to the meaning or motive behind what is said or done, disagreements and quarrels. The keys to this kind of problem are the ability to “understand the misunderstanding”. Many problems in the Church are created through a misunderstanding of action or intent.

Misinterpretation is a mental process whereby we give meaning to what we “see” with our physical sense or imagination. Many problems are created through misinterpretation. Deliberate misinterpretation causes many problems in Christian circles. Original sin resulted when Satan understood to twist God’s word to man.

Today, sin abounds because of deliberate misinterpretation of God’s Word by the ungodly within and without the Church. Many congregations have members with “gifts” for misinterpretation who do not cease to use it.

Conflict Resolution is the act of finding a way to settle conflicts. It is the channelling of all available human and material resources to achieve peaceful co-existence among members of the Church.

A Minister must be proactive rather than reactive. This means anticipating a problem and curtailing it before it occurs, rather than waiting until issues degenerate into problems and crises before they are attended to. A proactive Minister is most likely to pick out potential areas of conflict in the Church and take measures to solve them before they result in crises.

It is one of the sobering realities of the ministry that severe tensions and even hostilities may arise on occasions between the Minister and the people. A Minister needs to have WISDOM and HUMILITY to seek assistance in handling these situations before serious damages are caused.

No Minister is immune from controversy. He can hardly expect to be. The prophetic voice will provoke a reaction and challenge established patterns. Jesus said we would be opposed just as he was. However, a Minister does well to realize that change ought to be introduced gradually. Should misunderstanding arise these can often be resolved to everyone’s satisfaction in loving and conciliatory ways. A new Minister in the Church may find that resentment to change can be overcome if he first builds greater trust or takes more time to explain the reasons behind the changes so that people’s fear of change is gently overcome. Where there is a general acceptance of changes, the Minister still has a profound obligation to care for the minority who may feel hurt or displeased by the changes.

Should controversy or division arise within the Church the Minister should maintain the goodwill of all parties even if the trouble focuses on him or his family.

A Minister must avoid aggression and defensiveness, but seek to exercise a balance in the style of his conflict management, to bring the Church through a biblical resolution of the conflict.

Provoking conflict or taking extreme positions may increase factional feelings and even generate a Church flirt. Moderating spirit will generally engender Church growth. Ministers must strive to forget their self-interest for the good of the Church. It is always to be hoped that the Church will place the pastoral care of their Minister and his family as their utmost priority.

When a Minister feels he is misunderstood, or unfairly criticized, by an influential group in the Church, he must try to accurately assess the level and extent of discontent before reacting.

He should strive to maintain a detached and objective attitude toward the people and the circumstances before taking. If however, the criticisms represent the genuine concern of a large proportion of the people, any temptation to “dig in’ or react strongly will not solve the problem or enhance his Ministry.

It is a wise Minister who has developed senior friends to whom he can confidently submit himself and the situation at such crises time. The Pastor and his family may become very vulnerable at these times. But a Minister of integrity with a servant’s heart is not going to insist on staying if it involves fighting with the people whom he has been called to shepherd. It may be better for all if he leaves rather than causing a Church split.

A Minister should preach and teach during peaceful times on conflict resolution, forgiveness, handling anger and other vital issues. Attempting to address these matters from the pulpit at times of conflict is rarely understood as anything other than defensiveness, and may generate further anger and disunity among the Church members.

All members are your children and they should be treated as such.

THE EFFECTIVE MINISTER’S WIFE

A Ministers wife is not one adorned with worldly wisdom and characteristics, but one clothed with the spirit of meekness, gentleness and humility. She must be steadfast in doctrine and very thorough in the knowledge of God’s word (Malachi 2: 7, 2Tim. 2:15)

1. She must be zealous for the work of God and show the ability to communicate very well.

2. Must have a clear understanding of her role as a Minister’s wife with the ability to supervise all activities with diligence.

3. Leading and counselling women on programmes that can meet their needs

4. Outreaches to different categories of women in the Church, single sisters, nursing mothers and pregnant sisters.

5. Organizing development programme for children and youths for Christ, teaching them how to earn a living

6. Loving and caring for the needy, the sick and widows.

7. Organizing intercessory groups to intercede for all arms of the Church.

8. Planning Evangelical outreaches to save sinners and visitation to restore backsliders.

9. Ensuring that every member of the Minister’s household is involved in Church programmes and activities.

10. Reminding her husband and assisting him to prepare for the Church programme.

11. Praying always for her husband, especially when he is officiating on the altar.

12. Agreeing and supporting her husband in all things. Amos 3:3

13. Submissive to the authorities and co-operating with other Minister’s wives of all ranks.

REWARD FOR EFFECTIVE MINISTRY

So, he who has received five talents came and brought five talents, saying, Lord, you delivered to me five talents, look I gained five more talents besides them. His lord said to him, well done, good and faithful servant, you faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into

the joy of your Lord.” (Matt. 25: 20 -21)

Effective Ministry brings great physical and eternal benefits, for God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love. Such benefits include the salvation of sinners and the restoration of backsliders.; Victory and dominion over sin; answered prayers and open doors to God’s blessings, joys of service, Righteousness which exalts the nation, the crown of glory commendation from God, heavenly mansion, the hope of spending eternity in the kingdom of God and favour from Men.

I pray the Almighty God to empower all our Ministers and their wives to carry the cross to the end. May God’s abundant rewards be your portion in the mighty name of our Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.
